Having a baby can be one of the most beautiful moments in your life. This stage of life is filled with plenty of ups and downs for married couples. Financial problems, lack of sleep, and feeling disconnected from your partner are all major obstacles faced during marriage while starting a family. Understanding how to prioritize your marriage after kids will help you and your spouse feel the sparks again!

Plan Date Nights

Life can be unpredictable, however, doing a little planning with your spouse will make life easier. As parents, you can get so caught up in caring for your child that it can be difficult to make some quality one-on-one time. Soccer games, play dates, and after school activities can sometimes cause a wedge between you and your spouse. As time goes on, this can become a habit. Start by setting a small amount of time aside for just the two of you. This can be anything from going out to dinner, neighborhood walks, or even taking time to watch a movie or show together. This will allow both of you to relax and enjoy each other’s company without distractions. There are plenty of date night ideas that can help you refocus on your marriage and ultimately keep both of you on the right track.

Upgrade Your Personal Space

Having a space that’s exclusively for the two of you will help you feel more connected to your partner. Kids have a way of slipping into every area of the home. Whether it’s toys, clothes, or crumbs, kids know how to leave their mark. Pick an area in your home that can be just for you and your partner. This space can be your master bedroom, family room, or any other space that works for you and your family. The room can be decorated and designed specifically to the both of your liking. Knowing that you have a sacred space to resort to can keep stress levels low as well as allow you to both feel a deeper connection. Upgrades can range from new furniture, a new paint color, to even decluttering your space. Even small changes to your space can help you refocus your marriage on what really matters. If bigger home upgrades are what you want, look into the cost to refinance your home to help out with the major upgrades. Refinancing can lower your monthly bills which can free up more money for renovations. These bigger home upgrades could include remodeling your master bedroom or bathroom to give you a beautiful space to relax and recharge together. Creating a comfortable space that’s just for the two of you will bring a sense of peace to your marriage.

Show Your Spouse Appreciation

It can be very easy to get caught up in all of life’s craziness. Sometimes, showing your spouse appreciation takes the back seat in a marriage. To show your partner appreciation, it’s crucial to know and understand what their love language is. Love languages can allow you to ensure that you’re loving your partner to the fullest extent. What you need from your spouse may not be what they need from you. Communicating with your spouse about what you need from them to feel valued will ensure that two of you are both having your needs met. To help rekindle your marriage, go the extra mile with your partner and show you appreciate them by using their love languages. If your spouse’s love language is words of affirmation you can write them a romantic love letter to express your appreciation and love. Or if your spouse’s love language is acts of service, you can make them breakfast in the morning to show them how much you care. Love languages are a sure way to make sure that you are giving your partner the love that they need.

Try Something New

Married couples can fall into a routine easily. They can often go into autopilot, which can lead to boredom and feeling less and less connected with one another. Breaking the routine is a great way to rekindle your marriage. By trying something new, excitement can be brought back into your marriage and it can help create a sense of spontaneity. Chances are that there’s at least one thing you’ve always wanted to try. Whether it’s learning a new language or learning how to dance, learning something new with your partner will improve intimacy and closeness. Couples classes are a great way for you and your partner to get out of your comfort zone with each other. By taking the time to learn something new with your partner, you’re setting your marriage up for success as well as bringing back some excitement to your marriage.

It’s important to make your marriage a priority after having kids. Having a strong marriage foundation will allow you and your partner to be better equipped to handle anything that may come your way.
